Not long after I posted the Daily Darfur this morning, Mandate Darfur announced that it was forced to cancel its conference for Darfuri civil society members:
"After many months of working with Darfurian civil society to build a mandate for peace, we regret to acknowledge that the Sudanese government is obstructing the safe passage of Darfurian delegates from Sudan, forcing us to cancel the conference."
From AllAfrica.com:
But Sudan's security services had "harassed our delegates, confiscated passports and threatened the conference coordinators in Sudan."
Not terribly surprising, but interesting given that Mandate Darfur has endorsements from, among others, US Envoy Scott Gration, AU/UN mediator Djibrill Bassole, and the Secretary General of the Arab League.
I hope that all of the above-mentioned men of influence take this as an indication of Khartoum's true feelings about peace in Darfur.
